On June 18, 2020, the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement refuting claims that Kenyan nationals in Saudi Arabia were being mistreated while seeking help at the Kenyan embassy in Riyadh.

The statement came after a video surfaced online claiming that Rahab Njeri, a Kenyan woman, died due to the negligence of embassy officials who allegedly threw her out of the embassy offices where she had gone to seek assistance.

However, the ministry clarified that Njeri died in a hospital where the Kenyan embassy had booked her, refuting claims of neglect.

The ministry added that Njeri was accorded assistance despite her irregular status and lack of medical insurance and other relevant documentation.

The death of a Kenyan abroad, irrespective of the circumstances, is always a concern to the Ministry both at Headquarters and Kenyan Embassies on the ground.
