Manufacturers Tap into Kenya's Growing Smartphone Market

Published on June 18, 2020

Kenya's smartphone market is growing rapidly, with manufacturers tapping into the trend by offering innovative devices that cater to consumers' needs.

According to a recent survey by Delloite, the majority of Kenyans prefer using new mobile phones, driven by increased access to affordable devices and the constant need to upgrade to the latest phone versions, especially among younger users.

As of 2020, people between 25-34 years are the majority owners of smartphones, with 97% of users in the 35-45 and 16-24 year brackets also owning smartphones.

With 8.3 million Kenyans active on social media, social media penetration has contributed to high smartphone buys, with users spending close to 3 hours a day on social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook, and Twitter.

Despite the price of smartphones dropping, smartphone users continue to focus on specifications, brand perception, and quality, resulting in brands offering higher specifications at lower pricing.

"To remain relevant in the market, there is a need to have in mind the deep understanding of consumers' needs," said Arthur Xian, Vivo Smartphone Kenya Chief Executive Officer.

As part of its efforts to tap into Kenya's growing smartphone market, Vivo Smartphone Kenya will next week unveil its first-ever Dual Punch Hole Camera phone, the vivo V19.

The vivo V19 features an L-shaped quad rear camera with a LED flash and a dual punch front camera at the right corner, as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor under the AMOLED screen.

"With industry-leading selfie technology, a beautiful design, and strong performance, V19 is perfect for young consumers who care about camera and entertainment features," said Arthur Xian.
