As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has expressed concerns over the possibility of delaying the KCPE and KCSE exams scheduled for April 2021.

Speaking before the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on COVID-19 on June 18, 2020, Prof. Magoha noted that the rising number of coronavirus cases might prevent schools from reopening in September as initially planned.

He emphasized that if the exams are not held in April 2021, it may not be feasible to conduct them the following year.

‘We are looking at the calendar to determine when we can reopen schools and hold exams. If we open in September, we might hold exams in April. Beyond that, it won’t be feasible to hold the exams. Although we intended to open in September, I cannot say at this stage if that will be possible. Our numbers are going up, and we might experience a peak in September or October, and we will decide whether to open our schools,’ Prof. Magoha said.

He further warned that a delay in the exams would have significant implications for the education system in the country.
