On June 18, 2020, Deputy President William Ruto was rumored to be forming a new faction of the Jubilee Party, called Jubilee Asili, which could be a breakaway from the original Jubilee Party.
This comes just hours after the Wiper and CCM parties made a pact to work together towards the 2022 elections.
CCM leader Issac Rutto stated at the event that President Uhuru Kenyatta is too young to retire in 2022, a sentiment also echoed by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Speaking at the ruling party's headquarters, Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe said the signing of an agreement between Wiper and CCM would pave the way for a joint coalition with major parties.
According to sources, if Ruto forms Jubilee Asili, it would be reminiscent of the FORD split in August 1992, when the party divided into two factions – FORD-Asili (led by Kenneth Matiba) and FORD-Kenya (led by Oginga Odinga).
