On June 18, 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the Extraordinary China-Africa Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19, a critical moment in the global fight against the pandemic.
President Xi expressed gratitude to President Ramaphosa and President Sall for joining him in initiating the Summit, and appreciated the participation of all colleagues present. He also extended his regards to other African leaders who were unable to attend.
As the world grappled with the devastating impact of COVID-19, President Xi observed a moment of silence for those who had tragically passed away due to the virus, and expressed condolences to their families.
President Xi acknowledged the resilience of both China and Africa in the face of the pandemic, citing the Chinese people's fierce fight and enormous sacrifices to bring the situation under control, as well as the African Union's effective coordination and strong measures to slow the spread of the virus.
He emphasized the importance of mutual support and solidarity between China and Africa, highlighting China's commitment to its longstanding friendship with Africa and its determination to pursue greater cooperation and solidarity.
President Xi outlined four key commitments: staying committed to fighting COVID-19 together, enhancing China-Africa cooperation, upholding multilateralism, and taking China-Africa friendship forward.
He announced that China would cancel the debt of relevant African countries in the form of interest-free government loans due to mature by the end of 2020, and work with the global community to provide greater support to African countries hardest hit by the pandemic.
President Xi also emphasized the need for the international community to act more forcefully on debt relief and suspension for Africa, and for China to work with the UN, WHO, and other partners to assist Africa's response to COVID-19.
He concluded by reaffirming China's commitment to its friendship with Africa and its determination to take the China-Africa comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership to a greater height.
