Published on June 18, 2020, Nairobi County Assembly is facing power struggles as eight members have been removed from House committees.

Three of the eight ward representatives, including Majority Leader Abdi Guyo, former minority leader Elias Otieno, and MCA Benson Mwangi, have been omitted from any of the 26 committees reconstituted last week.

Speaker Beatrice Elachi stated that the suspended MCAs will be considered to rejoin the committees after serving their suspension terms, with the aim of restoring order in the assembly and ensuring better service delivery.

'I have made the ruling not because of myself but because of the interests of Nairobi politics and most importantly for the people of Nairobi,' said Ms Elachi.

Additionally, five other ward reps from ODM were suspended from House committees for failing to pay their monthly subscription fees, with minority whip Peter Imwatok stating that they will be reinstated once they clear the fees.

The suspension of the MCAs means they will miss allowances for attending committee and assembly sittings during their suspension period.
