On June 17, 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China would exempt some African countries from repaying zero-interest rate loans due at the end of 2020.

According to state television, the move is part of China's efforts to support African countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the framework of the China-Africa cooperation forum, China will further extend loan payment forbearance for some countries, including African nations.

Additionally, China has expressed its willingness to give priority to African countries once COVID-19 vaccines are ready for use.
