On June 16, 2020, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with UNESCO, unveiled a digital STEM mentorship programme aimed at keeping students connected to STEM education amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The programme, which will reach over 10 million secondary and primary school learners, aims to inspire young minds through exposure to the beauty and power of science.

Chief Administrative Secretary for Education, Ms. Mumina Bonaya, encouraged learners to utilize their time at home for continuous learning through technology.

Ms. Bonaya noted that learners often develop unwarranted anxiety about science and math subjects in school, which affects their decision to focus on science subjects.

"The ministry calls upon parents, teachers, and other guardians to support learners through these digital channels," Ms. Bonaya said during the programme's launch.

The Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, emphasized the importance of proper guidance in socializing students to STEM courses early.

Dr. Kipsang also highlighted the need to provide mentorship and encouragement to boys, who are often uncomfortable with STEM subjects.

Regional Director for UNESCO, Ms. Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta, expressed the need to introduce a dual system of education, similar to the one in Germany, which integrates school-based learning with work-based practice.

Ms. Ndong-Jatta noted that this approach helps young people build skills and experience in the world of work.
