Kenya Records Highest Number of COVID-19 Cases in a Single Day

On June 17, 2020, Kenya reported its highest number of COVID-19 cases in a single day, with 184 new cases confirmed. Nairobi accounted for the majority of the cases, with 111 reported.

According to Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman, the number of cases was the highest the country had recorded in a single day since the first case of the disease was registered on March 13.

Out of the 184 cases, Nairobi accounted for the highest at 111, Mombasa (19), Kajiado (14), Meru (13), Kiambu (nine), Busia (six), Machakos (three), Nakuru (four) while Kwale, Nakuru, Garissa, Taita Taveta and Vihiga recorded a single case each.

Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said a total of 548 COVID-19 patients were being taken care of in government facilities. Out of the 548, five were critically ill, three were on ventilators and two were on supplementary oxygen supply.

As of June 17, 2020, globally, at least 8,287,338 people had contracted the virus. 4,341,853 had recovered while 446,669 others had died since the virus broke out in China in December 2019.
