On June 16, 2020, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez announced that he and his wife, Ana Garcia, had tested positive for coronavirus.
According to the Honduran health ministry, the country has registered nearly 10,000 COVID-19 infections and 330 deaths since the start of the pandemic in mid-March.
"Over the weekend I began to feel some discomfort and today I have been diagnosed as having been infected with Covid-19," Hernandez said during a press conference on Tuesday.
As the leader of Honduras, Hernandez has been at the forefront of the country's strategy to combat and prevent the coronavirus, promoting social isolation, face masks, and hand washing in numerous press appearances.
Despite a March curfew, the number of infections has been increasing, with the military and police deployed to ensure the population remained home.
