On June 17, 2020, a three-storey building under renovation in Nyamira partially collapsed, leaving two construction workers critically injured.
According to Dr. Silas Ayunga, Director of Health Services at Nyamira Referral Hospital, the injured workers, Samuel Bogonko, 47, and Nelson Mogaka, 35, were rescued from the rubble and brought to the hospital the previous evening.
Dr. Ayunga stated that Samuel Bogonko had sustained severe head and backbone injuries, while Nelson Mogaka had minor head injuries.
"We will conduct a C-T scan for Bogonko to determine the extent of the head and backbone injury to refer him to an appropriate medical facility for specialized care and treatment," Dr. Ayunga said.
The Nyamira County Commissioner, Amos Mariba, visited the scene and revealed that the workers were repairing a building that had been partly demolished by a grader during a road construction project.
Commissioner Mariba added that the owner of the building, Joseph Atika, a retired teacher, had been arrested and would face charges once investigations were complete.
