Published on June 17, 2020, the Talai Council of Elders has taken a decisive step to maintain unity within their ranks by expelling a member who opposed the coronation of Deputy President William Ruto as the Kalenjin kingpin.
Christopher Koyogi, the expelled member, had dismissed the coronation ceremony as illegal, sparking a heated debate within the council. The council's Chairman, Retired Reverend Canon James Baasi, stated that 22 out of 25 members voted to expel Koyogi for tainting the image of the clan.
The council also accused external forces of interfering with their role following the controversial dawn ceremony. Rev. Baasi emphasized that the cultural activities undertaken were consistent with the Talai rites and that they had invited the deputy president to attend the initiation process and take over leadership mantle following the death of retired president Daniel Moi.
The council Secretary General, David Sulo, revealed that various sub-families of the clan were involved in the deliberation of the crowning process, including Kapturgat, Kapsumet, Kapchesang, and Mursoi.
