On June 16, 2020, Nigeria recorded 31 deaths, the highest number of fatalities in 24 hours, a grim milestone in the country's fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Published on June 17, 2020, the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed 490 new cases, bringing the total number of infections to 17,148.

As the government struggles to contain the spread of the virus, its meeting with the striking members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) ended in deadlock.

Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige acknowledged the crucial role of health workers in the fight against Covid-19, stating that they have suffered greatly during the pandemic.

"It is essential to note that we have reached an agreement in many areas, and the government side has shown evidence of the payment of hazard and inducements allowances," he said.

However, the doctors remain unconvinced, with NARD President Aliyu Sokomba stating that they would only suspend the strike when the government provides tangible evidence of meeting their demands.
