On June 17, 2020, the Senate Select Committee was formed to hear and make a judgment on the impeachment motion of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who had been impeached by the members of the county assembly.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala was elected to chair the committee, with Senator Abshiro Halake as his deputy.

Out of the 10 members of the committee present, 9 members voted to elect Senator Malala as the chairperson, while 5 voted to elect Senator Halake as his deputy.

Senator Malala announced that the committee has 10 days to make a fair judgment and will tender their reports by Friday next week.

He assured the public that the committee would be impartial and allow all litigants to appear before them.

The committee's formation comes after Governor Waiguru survived the first impeachment attempt, with the Senate voting to handle the impeachment motion through a select committee and plenary session.

During the sitting, 45 senators voted in favor of a select committee, while 14 voted for a plenary hearing.

As of the time of the article's publication, Governor Waiguru needs the support of six out of 11 senators to survive impeachment.
