Published on June 17, 2020
Kenya has a thriving eSports scene, with many talented gamers competing in various tournaments organized by Pro Series Gaming (PSG). The tournaments, which include FIFA, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat, have attracted a large following, with gamers participating either as a group or individually.
According to PSG, the eSports market is wildly profitable, with some athletes earning upwards of $3 million (approximately Ksh300 million) and teams earning up to $24 million (approximately Ksh240 million). This has led to an increase in the number of gamers participating in the tournaments, with many hoping to make a name for themselves in the competitive eSports scene.
One of the most notable eSports athletes from Kenya is Dominique McLean, alias Sonic Fox, who competes in multiple fighting games like Injustice: Gods Among Us and the Mortal Kombat Series. McLean's success has inspired many young gamers to take up the sport, and he is widely regarded as one of the best eSports athletes in the country.
On the FIFA side, there are a number of athletes who stand out, specifically, with the recently concluded season of the PSG FIFA FAN FEST, where there was a lot of names put up on the board like MoM_Mauwano, Azbak, the current FFF champion and his adversary Collins Oyindo. We also have Aziz, the 2015 FIFA world champion.
It's worth noting that eSports athletes devote a lot of time into their craft. In a 2019 interview with a member of the Watchmen Call of Duty team, they said that they would spend up to 8 hours a day practising in preparation for the PSG Elite tournament.
For those interested in pursuing a career in eSports, PSG offers multiple tournaments throughout the year. Check out their social media to stay informed about the latest tournament.
