Published on June 17, 2020, a Senate Select Committee has been formed to investigate the impeachment of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru. Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala will chair the committee.
Nominated Senator Abshiro will serve as the vice-chairperson of the committee, deputizing Senator Malala.
The decision to form the committee was reached during a chaotic Senate session on Tuesday, amidst resistance from allies of Deputy President William Ruto.
Senate Minority Leader James Orengo clashed with former Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen and former Majority Whip Susan Kihika during the session.
Orengo claimed that Governor Waiguru is being targeted by forces outside the Kirinyaga County Assembly.
“Waiguru’s head is being asked for, not by the county assembly. I can tell you and I have evidence, the people who are looking for Waiguru’s head are not the county assembly,” said Orengo.
It is worth noting that Orengo was part of the group that pushed for Waiguru’s removal as Devolution Cabinet Secretary in 2015 over alleged graft claims.
The other members of the committee include Moses Kajwang’ (Homa Bay), Mwangi Githiomi (Nyandarua), Anuar Loitiptip (Lamu), Stewart Madzayo (Kilifi), Philip Mpaayei (Kajiado), Michael Mbito (Trans Nzoia), and Nominated Senators Abshiro Halake, Beth Mugo, Beatrice Kwamboka, and Judith Pareno.
