Published on June 17, 2020, a Senate select committee was formed to hear the impeachment motion against embattled Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru. The committee has now elected Cleophas Malala as its chairman and Abshiro Halake as his deputy.

Malala, the Kakamega Senator, was elected unopposed by the 9 members present out of the 11-member committee. Halake, a nominated Senator, beat Nyandarua's Paul Mwangi Githiomi by 5 votes to 4.

Senator Malala has assured the public that the committee will be impartial and allow all litigants to appear before them. He also urged the committee to rise to the occasion, stating that 'the stakes are high' and 'the focal attention is on us.'

The committee has 10 days to make a fair judgment and will submit its report by Friday next week. Governor Waiguru now needs the support of only six out of 11 senators to keep her governor's job.

The 11-member team includes Senators Abshiro Halake, Michael Mbito, Mwangi Paul Githiomi, Beth Mugo, Anuar Loitiptip, Philip Mpaayei, Cleophas Malala, Beatrice Kwamboka, Stewart Madzayo, Judith Pareno, and Moses Kajwang'.
