On June 17, 2020, the construction of the Ksh 1.7 billion Likoni floating footbridge commenced, marking a significant step towards alleviating the perennial congestion at the Likoni crossing channel.
Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata stated that the project aims to ease the pressure on overcrowded Likoni ferries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Likoni floating footbridge is expected to reduce congestion at the crossing channel and provide residents with easy access to Mombasa Island and the mainland south.
Elungata noted that the project will be undertaken by the State Department of Infrastructure through its implementing agency, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
The contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), is currently on site at the Liwatoni area of Mombasa, where the floating bridge will start towards the mainland south.
Elungata stated that the construction work is expected to be complete by November 2020.
He emphasized that the new floating bridge will be for the exclusive use of pedestrians, providing an alternative to the ferries and enhancing trade and integration between residents of the island and mainland south.
