Nairobi Landlord in Trouble After Evicted Tenant Left Body Behind

On June 17, 2020, a shocking incident unfolded in Nairobi's Umoja estate, where a landlord, Nancy Njuguna, was arraigned in court over allegations of aiding an evicted tenant to dispose of a human body.

The tenant, David Migwi Kariuki, had left the body behind after being evicted from the house due to rent arrears. The body was later found at a dumping site in Tumaini Primary School by locals, who alerted the police to investigate the matter.

According to an affidavit by Inspector John Kanampiu, the police received information about a human body in the school compound and immediately launched investigations. Their inquiries led them to Njuguna's house, where the garbage originated from.

It was revealed that Njuguna had decided to lock the house after Kariuki failed to pay rent for several months. However, Kariuki returned to the house, broke in, and took his belongings, leaving behind huge bales of wedding decor materials and a blue water tank, which contained the human body.

Njuguna allegedly hired three men, including Kennedy Otieno Omar and Nicholas Kimanthi, to clean the house and dispose of the body. Omar wrapped the body in wedding decor materials, and Kimanthi dumped it at the school.

Kimanthi told the court that he did not know the contents of the materials, as Omar and another suspect, Kamau, had asked him to take the materials to a dumpsite. The suspects were released on a cash bail of Ksh 100,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh 200,000 with a surety of the same amount each.

It is worth noting that Kariuki, 42, has been linked to the murder of another woman whose body parts were collected in different parts of Nairobi in April 2019. He was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives in Ruai, where he had relocated after the latest murder.
