On June 15, 2020, Sudan's public prosecutor, Taj Al-Sir Ali Al-Hebr, announced the discovery of a mass grave east of the capital Khartoum.

According to Al-Hebr, investigations into the grave have reached advanced stages and the case will be presented to the judiciary within two or three weeks.

The grave contains the remains of recruits allegedly killed in 1998, when security forces reportedly opened fire on some recruits who were trying to flee an obligatory recruitment training camp to spend Idd-al-Adha with their families after the authorities refused to grant them leave.

As reported in 1998, around 200 recruits were killed, most of them drowned in the River Nile near the Ailafoon camp, east of Khartoum.

Earlier this year, the public prosecutor formed an investigation committee to look into the incident, which received testimonies from witnesses and families of the victims.
