The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a major salary boost for teachers in Kenya, with over 100,000 set to benefit from the promotion to Grade C1 in July.
According to the TSC, a total of Sh. 7 billion has been set aside for the exercise, which will see teachers in Grade B5 (previously P1) automatically moved to Grade C1.
Teachers in Grade B5 currently earn a basic salary of between Sh. 21,756 and Sh. 27,195, but will now take home between Sh. 27,195 and Sh. 33,994.
The promotion will affect teachers who were already in service as of July 2017 and are strictly under the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG), and not Schemes of Service.
Additionally, the TSC has also announced plans to promote over 5,000 diploma teachers in secondary schools, with those in C1 being moved to C2 and C2 teachers being moved to C3.
It's worth noting that the TSC has been allocated Sh. 266 billion for its activities by the National Treasury, with Sh. 257.97 billion set to be utilized for teacher resource management.
