Busia Airstrip Becomes Hotspot for Covid-19 as Truckers Engage in High-Risk Behavior

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread, the old Busia airstrip has transformed into a holding zone for truck drivers awaiting tests. However, the situation takes a concerning turn at night, when the airstrip becomes a hub for illicit activities, including commercial sex and alcohol consumption.

According to residents, the airstrip, which was once a popular spot for politicians, government officials, and traders, has seen a significant increase in the number of truckers parking their vehicles, with over 200 trailers currently stationed at the facility.

While the directive to park the trailers at the airstrip may have been a blessing in disguise for some residents, who have set up makeshift structures to sell food to the truckers, the situation has also led to the rise of commercial sex workers, who are taking advantage of the captive clients.

Residents have expressed concerns about the safety of the area, with some fearing that the spread of Covid-19 could be catastrophic if left unchecked. They have called on the government to take immediate action to contain the situation, including fencing off the airstrip and deploying police to restrict movement.

County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri has acknowledged the risks associated with the situation, stating that it is dangerous for truckers to interact with locals, and has urged them to restrict their interactions.

Meanwhile, motorbike operators in the area have also been identified as a potential weak link in containing the spread of Covid-19, with many riders failing to fumigate their vehicles between trips.

As of Sunday, Busia had 312 positive cases of truck drivers, with many residents expressing concerns about the lack of support from the government to address the situation.
