On June 17, 2020, the World Economic Forum (WEF) announced its 2020 Technology Pioneers list, featuring 100 technology firms from around the world. Among them were two Kenyan start-ups, Twiga Foods and Lori Systems, which have made significant contributions to the global tech scene.

Twiga Foods, a pioneer in efficient supply chains, has been credited with lowering food costs in Africa. The company's innovative model allows mobile technology, food producers, packhouses, and vehicles to converge, delivering farm produce to urban retailers free of charge. This model has not only raised farmers' yields but also stabilized consumer prices and ensured safety.

Twiga Foods has recently expanded its services to include fast-moving goods such as cooking oil. The company allows small shops, food vendors, and grocery stores to order supplies online, which are then delivered to their doorstep the following day. This has made it easier for small-scale vendors to access essential goods.

Lori Systems, the other Kenyan firm, is a tech-driven logistics services company that provides supply-chain management solutions to cargo owners. Founded in 2016, Lori Systems ensures flexibility, reliability, and cost savings for its clients. The company's innovative approach to logistics has made it a replica of Uber, but for cargo.

According to Susan Nesbitt, WEF's head of the Global Innovators Community, this year's class of Technology Pioneers are improving society and advancing their industries around the world. 'These are the companies that think differently and stand out as potential game changers. We are looking forward to the role they will play in shaping the future of their industries,' she said.

The award, in its 20th edition, recognizes technology firms addressing global issues with cutting-edge innovations like artificial intelligence to protect climate and improve healthcare. This year's awardees are leaders in carbon capture, alternative meat, and circular economies, while others aim to address food security and financial access. The firms are also contributing to Covid-19 pandemic responses through testing and diagnostics.

Of the hundred firms selected, over one quarter are female-led, more than double the industry average. These firms also come from diverse regions that stretch beyond traditional technology hubs, with companies using innovative technology in novel ways all around the world.
