As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya is at a critical juncture in its economic recovery. In June 2020, I, Emma Wade-Smith, UK Trade Commissioner to Africa, embarked on a virtual visit to Kenya, a country that has shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
The pandemic has had a profound impact on the global economy, but it has also presented an opportunity for Kenya to rebuild better. As I spoke to female entrepreneurs in the 'Silicon Savannah,' I was struck by their trademark resilience and energy in adapting to the challenges posed by the pandemic.
The UK-Kenya relationship is built on a Strategic Partnership signed in January 2020, which has led to new investments in Kenya, including Sh170 billion from the UK. British investors and employers are doing inspiring work in Kenya, such as Azuri's provision of off-grid solar energy and Waitrose's partnership with Farm Africa to support Kenyan suppliers.
My visit highlighted the importance of government and the private sector working together to respond to the pandemic and build back better. I heard about the work between government and industry to ensure cargo continues to flow, including exports of Kenya's vegetables and cut flowers to the UK.
The UK has also pivoted its economic development programmes to support Kenya's response to and recovery from COVID-19. UK-funded TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) has adapted its work to reduce the cost and time it takes to move across East Africa's borders.
As we look to life after COVID-19, it is clear that Kenya has a unique opportunity to establish and embed the best environment and frameworks possible for economic recovery. The UK is providing over Sh1.46 billion in support on climate issues in Kenya, and companies like Shell are at the forefront of business efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
I was heartened by the warmth of Kenya's welcoming embrace, even through digital platforms. I look forward to my next visits, both virtual and in person.
