As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the country, Kenya's participation in the CAF Confederation Cup hangs in the balance. According to FKF CEO Barry Otieno, the country may forfeit its slot in the competition if the Betway Cup matches are not completed.

On June 16, 2020, Caf released a provisional list of clubs participating in the competition, but the FKF had already forwarded league leaders Gor Mahia as Kenyan representatives in the CAF Champions League, a decision that sparked controversy.

The case is still before the Sports Dispute Tribunal, with the final verdict expected on June 30. Otieno stated that they had written a letter to Caf requesting an extension, but the continental body has not responded.

However, Otieno expressed optimism that the remaining matches could be completed within 10 days if the situation allows after June 6, when the government may relax curfew rules and allow sporting activities.

“Kenya will not be having a representative in the Caf Confederation Cup if the coronavirus pandemic continues and the matches at quarterfinals stage are not completed. Caf have also not responded to our letter asking for an extension and as at now, we don’t know the deadline. We requested for an extension based on their timeline,” Otieno told Nairobi News.
