On May 30, 2020, a heinous crime shook the Umoja II estate in Nairobi when a woman's body was brutally murdered. The case took a new turn on June 16, 2020, when a landlady and a caretaker were charged with accessory to murder in connection with the crime.
Nancy Wanja Njuguna, the landlady, and Nicholas Kimathi, the caretaker, appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi and denied the charge. The two are accused of assisting David Migwi Kariuki in disposing of the body of the unknown female adult.
According to the court, the motive behind the move was to aid Migwi to escape punishment for murder. The court heard that Migwi had kept the body in his house for several days, and only disposed of it in a sack after the odor from its decomposing parts became unbearable.
Investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations revealed that Migwi had been on the run since April 17, 2019, when he was captured on CCTV walking out of Green Club along Latema Road in Nairobi CBD with a lady. The lady was later identified as 36-year-old Penina Wairimu Njeri, whose dismembered body parts were found dumped in different locations.
The case will be mentioned on July 1, 2020, for further directions. The two suspects were released on a bond of Ksh200,000 or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 100,000.
