On June 16, 2020, Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Linah Kilimo announced plans to introduce fish farming in 35 counties, including Elgeyo Marakwet, to enhance food security and household income.
The project is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda on Food Security, aiming to ensure nutrition security in the country and promote the Blue Economy.
According to Kilimo, the government will use secondary schools as model farms and encourage locals to rear fish through the introduction of Aquaponics technology, which guarantees a return on investment within the first six months of setup.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Executive Livestock and Fisheries Dr. Joseph Kiyeng welcomed the initiative, stating that the county is conducive for fish farming.
Director of Aqua Culture in the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Simon Macharia emphasized the importance of promoting fish ponds and dams in all parts of the country, citing the project's potential to alleviate food insecurity in the region.
