On June 16, the Senate made a significant decision in the ongoing impeachment case against Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru. A select committee was formed to investigate the allegations against her, with 45 Senators voting in support and 14 opposing the move. One Senator abstained from the vote.

The committee was ordered by Speaker Kenneth Lusaka to commence their work immediately and submit a report within 10 days. This development has sparked intense debate among Senators, with some leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto vehemently opposing the select committee.

Nakuru Senator Kihika Kimani described the committee as the 'Capitol Hill Sanitization Committee', a reference to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga. Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen also voiced his opposition, stating that the committee was a denial of justice to Kirinyaga residents.

However, Siaya Senator James Orengo claimed that it was other unidentified individuals who wanted Waiguru removed, rather than the residents of Kirinyaga. In a passionate speech, Orengo stated, 'This Senate should never be in a position where there is a dictation on how we handle our business. This is a very important institution.'

He also alleged that Waiguru's head was being sought not by the County Assembly, but by other individuals. Orengo stated, 'Waiguru's head is being asked for not by the County Assembly. I can tell you, and I have the evidence. The people who are looking for Waiguru's head is not the County Assembly.'
