Kirinyaga Governor Waiguru Faces Senate Committee Probe ¶
On June 16, the Senate voted to establish an 11-member committee to investigate Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who was impeached on June 9 for abuse of office and gross misconduct by Kirinyaga MCAs.
Forty-five senators voted in favor of the committee, while 14 voted against it, with one senator abstaining from the vote. The committee will comprise of senators Abshiro Halake, Dr. Michael Mbito, Mwangi Paul Githiomi, Beth Mugo, Anuar Loitiptip, Philip Mpaayei, Cleophas Malalah, Beatrice Kwamboka, Stewart Madzayo, Judith Pareno, and Moses Kajwang.
The motion to establish the committee was moved by nominated Senator Farhiya Ali Haji, who argued that a select committee probe is more thorough than a plenary hearing.
Some senators who supported the committee include Samuel Poghisio, Gideon Moi, Moses Kajwang, James Orengo, Mutula Kilonzo, Cleophas Malala, Ledama Olekina, Ochilo Ayacko, and Rose Nyamunga.
The 11-member committee has ten days to investigate the allegations against Governor Waiguru and table a report before the Speaker and the Senate, which will then rule on her fate.
According to Senate Standing Order 175, the impeachment ends at the committee level if it determines that the charges against the impeached governor do not merit.
