On June 15, 2020, the Senate voted to have a select committee determine the fate of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who was impeached by the Kirinyaga County Assembly the previous week.

Out of 59 Senators, 45 voted in favor of the committee hearing, while 14 voted against it.

ODM Chairman John Mbadi dismissed claims that the party was lobbying to save Waiguru, stating that ODM had not taken a position on the matter.

Mbadi emphasized that the Senators would make a decision based on evidence adduced by the Kirinyaga County Assembly, which impeached Waiguru for alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds.

He noted that it would be hypocritical for ODM to blindly defend Waiguru without first interrogating the evidence against her.

According to Mbadi, the fight against corruption was part of the March 9, 2018 pact between Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
