On June 16, 2020, the Senate voted to determine the impeachment of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru by a team of 11 Senators, rather than a committee of the whole house.
The decision was made by a vote of 45 in favour of the committee against 14 who were opposed to it, with 1 Senator abstaining.
Waiguru was impeached by Kirinyaga County Assembly members, who accused her of various charges, including gross misconduct, abuse of office, and manipulating public procurement procedures.
She is also accused of illegally conferring a benefit of Sh10 million to herself for travel allowance.
Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka gave the 11-member committee 10 days to complete the task and table a report in the house.
The committee members include Abshiro Halake, Michael Mbito, Mwangi Paul Githiomi, Beth Mugo, Anuar Loitiptip, Philip Mpaayei, Cleophas Malalah, Beatrice Kwamboka, Stewart Madzayo, Judith Pareno, and Moses Kajwang’.
“The hearing of charges for the proposed removal from office of a Governor is one of the most important functions of the Senate under the Constitution. I urge all Senators to exercise the highest level of responsibility on this matter,” Lusaka told the Senators before the vote.
