On June 16, 2020, a renovation project in Nyamira Town took a devastating turn when two workers were hit by debris from a building being demolished.
The incident occurred at the Water Supply area behind the County Commissioner's offices, where county engineers had earlier made a road reserve.
According to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba, the building was not approved for renovation, and the works were being undertaken illegally.
"We have confirmed that the house was condemned because it was standing on a road reserve and part of it had been knocked down from the reserved land," Mariba said.
The owner of the building, identified as Auka, rushed the two injured workers to the hospital.
Mariba led a team of security agencies to investigate the incident and confirmed that the building was indeed condemned.
The owner will face prosecution for contravening construction rules, with the County Commissioner stating, "The owner will have to face the law so as to serve as a lesson to other investors,"
