On June 16, 2020, Tanzanian President John Magufuli announced the reopening of schools in the country, effective June 29.
The decision comes after schools were closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected over 5.1 million people worldwide and killed over 333,000.
President Magufuli made the announcement while addressing Parliament in Dodoma, stating, “Because of the reduced cases of coronavirus in the country, I would like to take this opportunity to announce the reopening of all remaining schools, and all social activities that were restricted like wedding celebrations should also resume.”
He emphasized the need for life to return to normal, saying, “Life must go back to normal.”
Notably, university, college, and Form Six students had already resumed their studies on June 1.
