On June 16, 2020, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) issued a statement denying claims of electricity price increases for the month of June 2020.

According to EPRA, the base energy charge rates were reviewed in July 2018 and have remained unchanged since then.

EPRA Director-General Pavel Oimeke explained that fuel energy costs have been declining due to good hydrology and the government's efforts to shift away from expensive energy sources to cleaner and renewable sources like solar and wind.

EPRA's clarification statement followed reports by media outlets quoting a fake notice by Oimeke that increased the fuel energy cost charge by Ksh2.40 per kWh.

The alleged notice, which was not issued by EPRA, stated that the new pricing would take effect from all meter readings of June 2020.

However, EPRA clarified that the Inflation Adjustment and the Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA) levy have remained relatively stable over the past twelve months.

EPRA computes and gazettes the applicable pass-through parameters, including the Fuel Energy Cost (FEC), Forex Adjustment (FOREX ADJ.), and WRMA levy, and reviews the Inflation Adjustment biannually.
