June 16, 2020, marked a significant day in the ongoing saga surrounding Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru's impeachment. The Senate is set to deliberate on whether to uphold or throw away the impeachment motion.

Waiguru was impeached by the County Assembly on Tuesday last week, and the Senate is now discussing the best course of action. One of the key issues at hand is whether to subject the whole house to the hearing of the governor's accusations or let a committee of 11 Senators deliberate on the matter.

At the center of the controversy is Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, who has irked Kenyans with his claims that the Senate is an independent institution and cannot be dictated to by the people of Kirinyaga. According to Malala, the Senate cannot be micro-managed by certain groups of people living in a certain small corner of the country.

Malala argued that the best way for the Senate to deliberate on the matter is through a committee. He believes that this approach will ensure a fair and impartial hearing of the governor's accusations.

Malala is part of the 11-member committee selected by the House Business Committee to investigate the charges against the Governor. The other Senators selected for the committee include Abshiro Halake, Michael Mbito, Mwangi Paul Githiomi, Beth Mugo, Anuar Liotiptip, Philip Mpaayei, Beatrice Kwamboka, Stewart Madzayo, Judith Pareno, and Moses Kajwang.
