On June 9, 2020, Kirinyaga MCAs moved to impeach Governor Anne Waiguru, citing evidence of conflict of interest and misappropriation of public funds.

The MCAs presented several tenders that raised questions about Waiguru's handling of county finances.

Waiguru becomes the second governor in 2020 to face impeachment, following Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's ejection in January 2020 on corruption charges.

On June 16, 2020, the Senate plenary will debate the impeachment motion, with the Majority leader expected to move a motion to establish a Select Committee to investigate the case.

The 11 senators proposed to form the committee include:

  • Senator Abshiro Halake – Nominated Senator (KANU)
  • Senator Michael Mbito – Trans Nzoia (Jubilee)
  • Senator Mwangi Paul Githiomi – Nyandarua (Jubilee)
  • Senator Beth Mugo – Nominated (Jubilee)
  • Senator Anuar Loitiptip – Lamu (Jubilee)
  • Senator Philip Mpaayei – Kajiado (Jubilee)
  • Senator Cleophas Malalah – Kakamega (ANC)
  • Senator Beatrice Kwamboka – Nominated Senator ODM
  • Senator Stewart Madzayo – Kilifi (ODM)
  • Senator Judith Pareno – Nominated Senator (ODM)
  • Senator Moses Kajwang' – Homa Bay (ODM)

The committee will be subjected to a vote, and the majority (6) will decide whether to uphold Waiguru's impeachment or squash it.
