On Tuesday, a high-powered government delegation led by CS Amina Mohammed inspected the construction of the Wote Stadium in Makueni, which had stalled for months. The visit came after President Uhuru Kenyatta took it upon himself to ensure Jubilee's promises are delivered.
As the construction of the Wote Stadium resumes, it is a stark reminder of the unfulfilled promises made by Jubilee in 2013. The ruling party had promised to upgrade several sports facilities across the country, but many of these projects remain incomplete or have stalled.
One such project is the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret Town, which was among five facilities Jubilee promised to upgrade. Despite sinking over Sh175 million into sports projects in the North Rift region, both national and county governments have been left with eyesores after contractors abandoned the projects.
Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties have also sunk money into upgrading Kamariny and Chagaiya training facilities. The Kamariny Stadium, located in the high-altitude training base of Iten, had consumed Sh34,805,400 of taxpayers' money by the same period.
According to DP William Ruto, who was quoted in 2017, the stadium in Wote would be complete in six months, and the stadium in Kamariny would be complete in three months. However, these promises remain unfulfilled, and the projects continue to stall.
As of now, Sh699 million have been paid to contractors for incomplete works, out of the Sh2.4 billion promised stadia in 2013.
