On June 16, 2020, Deputy President William Ruto urged spiritual leaders to make timely presentations to the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya, established by the Government to facilitate the reopening of places of worship.
The council, constituted by President Uhuru Kenyatta, aims to assess essential protocols for reopening religious settings without exposing the faithful to COVID-19 threats.
DP Ruto noted the progress in ongoing discussions within the council and expressed hope that a final evaluation would be submitted soon, paving the way for the next course of action.
"We are pleased the Council is already developing protocols for the systematic resumption of services in the houses of prayer in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic," the DP said.
As Kenyans remain divided on whether to reopen worship places or keep them shut until the situation normalizes, DP Ruto's appeal underscores the need for a balanced approach to public health and religious freedom.
