On June 16, 2020, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) clarified that it had no plans to increase electricity prices in the country.
According to a statement issued by the authority, the reviewed base energy charge rates of July 2018 remain effective to date.
EPRA stated that it computes and gazettes the applicable pass-through parameters, including Fuel Energy Cost (FEC), Forex Adjustment (FOREX ADJ.), and Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA) levy, every month.
It added that the inflation adjustment and the WRMA levy have remained relatively stable over the past twelve months.
Good hydrology and the government's efforts to shift away from expensive energy sources have led to declining fuel energy costs, EPRA stated.
The denial comes after reports indicated that EPRA had announced changes through the Kenya Gazette on June 12, 2020.
However, EPRA Director General Robert Oimeke signed a notice stating that the agency had increased the fuel energy cost charge by Sh2.40 per kWh, effective from all meter readings of June 2020.
EPRA is the state organisation mandated to review and approve tariff amendments, established as the successor to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) under the Energy Act, 2019.
