On June 16, 2020, Deputy President William Ruto met with church leaders from East Africa Pentecostal Church in Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Nairobi, and Isiolo counties at his Karen offices in Nairobi.
During the meeting, Ruto expressed optimism about the quick resumption of worship services, citing the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya's efforts to develop protocols for reopening houses of worship.
"We are appealing to spiritual leaders to make timely presentations to the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya established by the government to expedite the reopening of the places of worship," Ruto said.
The council, chaired by Archbishop Anthony Muheria of the Nyeri Catholic Archdiocese, was jointly appointed by Interior CS Fred Matiang'i and his health counterpart Mutahi Kagwe to develop and implement protocols for the phased resumption of onsite worship.
