On June 16, 2020, the impeachment debate against Governor Ann Waiguru of Kirinyaga County heated up as Jubilee and Kanu Party officials joined the fray.

The officials, led by Moses Waweru, the Kanu's Branch Organizing Secretary, and Martin Muthiga, the Organizing Secretary for the ruling Jubilee Party, expressed their support for the impeachment motion, calling on the Senate to ensure fairness and justice.

Waweru stated that the President's stance on corruption was clear, and that bringing gender issues into the debate was trivializing the war on corruption.

He also cautioned ODM party leaders for their perceived interest in the matter, saying that any secret plan to shield the governor from a fair trial would be illegal and must be investigated.

Muthiga echoed Waweru's sentiments, saying that any move by a section of the Senators to shield the governor from the accusations tabled by the County Assembly would be resisted by all means.

The House Business Committee, chaired by Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, had last week recommended a committee to deliberate on the matter, but the recommendation would be tabled for approval or rejection on the same day.

If the proposal was rejected, the impeachment process would be discussed by the whole house, and if it was approved, an 11-member committee would commence the hearing and table their findings in the Senate sometime next week.

Other officials, including Moses Mugo, the Vice Secretary KANU, and Diana Wanja, the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Chairperson Kirinyaga County, also expressed their views on the matter.
