On June 1, Tanzania's Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa broke a 47-day silence on COVID-19 updates, revealing 66 active cases in the country.
According to the government's latest data, these cases were hospitalised in 10 regions, while the remaining 16 regions had no active cases.
President John Magufuli had previously declared the country 'coronavirus-free' due to prayers by citizens, despite warnings from the US embassy that hospitals in Dar es Salaam were 'overwhelmed' and the chances of contracting the virus were 'extremely high'.
Prime Minister Majaliwa urged Tanzanians to continue following safety guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus, but the country's total number of confirmed cases remains unclear.
On April 29, the government reported 509 cases, including 21 deaths, but this information has not been updated since then.
