On June 9, 2020, a National Youth Service officer's beret was allegedly stolen in the Mariguini slums of South B, Nairobi. The theft was allegedly carried out by Shariff Wamboya Saidi in cahoots with supervising youths undertaking cleaning work in the area.
According to reports, Saidi had threatened to shoot members of the public who pursued him after the theft. He was eventually arrested at his house but managed to slip away while being escorted to the Mariguini chief's office.
However, the members of the public cornered him again and he drew what turned out to be a toy gun, threatening to shoot them. He was overpowered and arrested.
On June 16, 2020, Saidi was charged with planning to commit a felony before Senior Principal Magistrate Angelo Kithinji of the Makadara Law Courts. He denied the charges and was freed on a Sh 100,000 bond with a surety of similar amount. The hearing of the case is set to start on August 20, 2020.
