On June 16, 2020, Tanzanian President John Magufuli announced that schools in the country would reopen on June 29, marking a significant shift in the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As reported by The Citizen, schools in Tanzania had been closed since March due to the pandemic. However, with the infection rate having dropped drastically, President Magufuli deemed it safe to reopen schools.

Notably, university, college, and Form Six students had already resumed their studies on June 1. The president urged residents to continue observing hygiene and preventive measures as instructed by health authorities.

The announcement comes as the 11th Parliament is set to be dissolved after completing its term, ahead of the General Election in October.
