On June 16, 2020, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced plans to partially reopen its trading floor to some market makers, effective June 17, 2020. This move comes after nearly three months of closure due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Reuters, some designated market makers, who oversee trading in the exchange's 2,200 listed companies, will be permitted to return to the trading floor. This will be in addition to the 25% of participants who returned when the trading floor partially reopened on May 26.

However, verbal bids and offers will still not be allowed. The trading floor will continue to operate with reduced headcount and additional safety precautions.

The NYSE closed its floor in March and moved to electronic trading for the first time in its 228-year history after one of its employees and a trader tested positive for COVID-19.
