According to a report published on June 16, 2020, increasing numbers of readers are paying for online news around the world, despite a low level of trust in the media.
Surveys conducted by YouGov in 40 countries for the Reuters Institute found that 20% of Americans and 42% of Norwegians subscribe to online news providers, with some readers taking out multiple subscriptions.
However, a large proportion of internet users say nothing could convince them to pay for online news, with around 40% in the United States and 50% in Britain.
The study also found that trust in news had fallen to its lowest level since 2012, with just 38% of respondents saying they trusted most news most of the time.
Confidence in the news media varied considerably by country, ranging from 56% in Finland and Portugal to 23% in France and 21% in South Korea.
