Published on June 16, 2020, a customer of Absa Bank Kenya had her bank account hacked, with hackers withdrawing a significant amount of money.

According to the customer, Winnie, the hackers accessed her account on May 11, 2020, at night, while she was working a night shift. She claimed that she had swiped her card for Sh. 1,000 at a fuel station in Kasarani, and shortly after, she received a message notification from the bank that Sh. 0 had been debited from her account.

However, within minutes, she received another notification that Sh. 109 had been debited, but was immediately debited back. Winnie claimed that she contacted the customer care, but while on the phone, another debit of Sh. 265,000 was made in her account.

The bank has since refunded Sh. 80,000, which is a fraction of the amount claimed to have been withdrawn, Sh. 600,000. The bank has maintained that Winnie had exaggerated the amount withdrawn.
