Published on June 16, 2020, the Nairobi government has announced plans to demolish homes in 13 areas to make way for water and sanitation projects.

The Ministry of Water has identified these areas as crucial for the city's growth, citing the need for improved sanitation and water supply.

Just a month after the Kariobangi demolitions left thousands of families homeless, construction works are ongoing at the 15-acre reclaimed land.

A stone wall fence has been erected at the site of the Kariobangi Waste Sewerage Treatment plant, with another 60 acres of land yet to be reclaimed.

According to Ministry of Water PS Joseph Irungu, the projects aim to offload the burden from the Dandora-Ruai Water Sewerage Treatment plant and improve sanitation coverage in Nairobi.

"I look at Nairobi as highly challenged, with sanitation at 60% and needing to move to 80 to 100%. We have to talk about these two projects; the Dandora-Ruai and the Kariobangi Sewerage treatment plant," said PS Irungu.

The ministry is keen on completing the projects, which include the construction of reservoirs to hold water from the Northern Water Collector Tunnel.

These water and sanitation projects have seen the following areas mapped out: Karura, Loresho, and Gigiri reservoirs, Kahawa West, Kabete, and Karen Treatment Ponds, as well as the Dandora, Kariobangi, and Eastleigh Sewerage plants.
