On June 15, 2020, Egypt's Foreign Ministry announced plans to take its concerns about Ethiopia's unilateral actions on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) to the United Nations Security Council.

According to a statement by Egypt's Foreign Ministry, any unilateral move by Ethiopia would 'negatively impact the right of Egypt in the Nile River and the international peace and security.'

Mr. Ahmad Hafez, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, stated that Egypt had attempted to reach a fair agreement to solve the GERD crisis while protecting the interests of Ethiopia and Sudan, but recent negotiations had not 'brought any positive results.'

Despite ongoing virtual negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan, the tripartite talks were initially set to conclude on June 13.

South Africa, the United States, and the European Union attended as observers in an effort to seal a deal on the contentious dam.

As reported earlier, the four-day negotiations demonstrated that there are many fundamental issues that Ethiopia continues to reject, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources.

The negotiations came months after talks stalled in February during US-sponsored meetings in Washington.
