On June 15, 2020, Athletics Kenya officials led by Youth Chair Bernard Korir handed over foodstuff and cash to athletes from Nyanza who have been training on their own in readiness of the rescheduled World Under 20 Championships.

Speaking during the event, Korir emphasized the potential of Nyanza athletes in sprints and field events, stating that a huge number of athletes in Nairobi and Rift Valley take part in long distance races, leaving a blank space for sprinters who, he believes, can come from Nyanza.

Beatrice Odero, a 100m and 200m sprinter who has represented Kenya thrice, expressed her difficulties in training on her own in Oyugis, Homa Bay, and called upon AK to send coaches to help them.

‘I cannot gauge my progress because I have no training partner or a coach to guide me. We would appreciate if one or two coaches came to our aid,’ Odero said.

Josephine Akinyi, a discus thrower, and Maurice Otieno, a 400m runner, also expressed their gratitude for AK’s support and wished to be given coaches and training facilities to help them.
